TAYA: Secure Virtual Numbers for High-Risk Users
TAYA: Half a Decade of Strengthening Digital Security
For more than a decade, Project Ainita has worked to advance cybersecurity and protect online privacy for users, journalists, and digital activists. Through initiatives like Ainita’s free VPN service and our ongoing public awareness efforts, we’ve focused on helping people access information securely and defend themselves against digital threats.
Over the past several years, one of the most common attack vectors used against online activists has been the exploitation of password-reset mechanisms and two-factor authentication (2FA) systems. State-aligned attackers and malicious actors have repeatedly abused these features to gain access to people’s email and social media accounts - exposing private data, unmasking identities, and, in some cases, leading to real-world prosecution.
Five years ago, in response to this escalating threat, we introduced TAYA - a secure virtual phone number service designed specifically to protect at-risk users. Since its launch, TAYA has become an essential layer of defense for journalists, human rights defenders, and digital activists facing sophisticated targeting.
How TAYA Works Today
TAYA provides users with a real phone number hosted in a country with strong cybersecurity standards and robust protections for freedom of expression. This number can then be used to secure online accounts with SMS-based two-factor authentication - adding a hardened layer of protection between you and potential attackers.
After your registration is approved, you receive an activation code and a download link for the TAYA app on Google Play.
Once activated, TAYA assigns your dedicated number.
All authentication SMS messages sent to that number are delivered privately through encrypted push notifications inside the app.
Your TAYA number works with any platform that requires SMS verification for account creation or 2FA.
Security by Design
TAYA is built to protect your identity, even under intense pressure:
Attackers cannot see or access messages sent to your TAYA number.
Your number is not linked to your real identity; no personal information or real names are ever collected or stored.
Even if someone discovers your TAYA number, they cannot compromise its messages or trace it back to you.
After four years of active use, TAYA continues to be a reliable and discreet security tool for individuals facing digital surveillance and targeted cyberattacks.
Eligibility and Access
Because of the technical and financial constraints of the project, TAYA remains reserved for journalists, human rights defenders, and social media activists who face heightened digital risks.
If you believe you qualify, you can request access by emailing:
If approved, you will receive an activation code along with installation instructions.
Your Identity Remains Completely Private
At no point during registration or use of the app will we ask for your real identity - and you should never provide it. This principle has been central to TAYA since its launch, and it remains fundamental to your safety.
