The executive chairman of Google in North Korea

Eric Schmidt, the executive chairman of Google, arrived in North Korea on Monday at the start of a private visit that has already provoked a public wrist-slapping from the US state department. Officials said the timing of the trip was "unhelpful", coming less than a month after Pyongyang launched a long-range rocket in defiance of the international community. The visit has also inevitably prompted speculation about Google's intentions in engaging with a country that stands at the polar opposite of its core value of open information access. North Korea operates a form of intranet inside its territory, but it is available only to a tiny elite of favored individuals and almost all residents have no access to the internet.

Schmidt is being accompanied on the trip by Bill Richardson, the former Democratic governor of New Mexico who has visited North Korea several times before. Before departing, Richardson attempted to squash any loose talk about Google, while at the same time fanning the flames of speculation by referring to social media as one area of Schmidt's interest.

"This is not a Google trip," he said. "But I'm sure [Schmidt] is interested in some of the economic issues there, the social media aspect."

اریک اشمیت، مدیر اجرایی گوگل طی سفری که اعتراض شدید وزارت امور خارجه آمریکا را به همراه داشت، روز دوشنبه وارد کره شمالی شد. مقامات آمریکایی بر این باورند که زمان انجام این سفر اکنون نبود چرا که با توجه به گذشت کمتر از یک ماه از آزمایش موشک دوربرد کره شمالی که با انجام این عمل خود را در برابر اعتراض جامعه جهانی قرار داده بود ، گوگل به طور ناخودآگاه با این ملاقات گمانه زنی هایی را در اذهان عمومی برای خود ایجاد کرد زیرا قصد همکاری با کشوری را دارد که در آن حق آزادی دسترسی به اطلاعات منع گردیده است.در کره شمالی، اینترنت به شبکه داخلی اینترانت محدود شده است اما برخی از شهروندان خاص دسترسی کامل به اینترنت جهانی را دارند.

بیل ریچاردسون، فرماندار سابق نیومکزیکو که در این سفر آقای اشمیت را همراهی کرد، قبل از عزیمت به کره شمالی در تکاپو بود جلوی صحبت های بی پایه و اساس و شایعات را در مورد گوگل بگیرد و این در حالی است که از طرف دیگر با قلمداد کردن رسانه های اجتماعی به عنوان یکی از اهداف مورد توجه آقای اشمیت ،خود به این شایعات دامن می زد.

وی تاکید کرد هدف اشمیت آشنایی به مسائل اقتصادی کره شمالی و رسانه های اجتماعی این کشور است.
